Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece. The population taking into account suburbs is 1 104 460 inhabitants living in the main area around the city.

The city was founded in 315 B.C. by  the king Cassander of Macedon, the son of captain Antipatr, whom Alexander the Great nominated sovereign’s vicegerent in Macedonia.

Paul the Apostle spread Gospel about Christianity (in 50 B.C.) in Thessaloniki and Roman proconsul Dimitry was martyrised here (303 B.C.) and became the  patron saint of Thessaloniki.

Thessaloniki joined the modern Greek state in 1913 which was burnt in 1917 and  rebuilt in 1920.

UNESCO marks Thessaloniki as a monument of world cultural heritage – there are many uniqie Byzantine monuments, churches and ancient ruins.

This city is also famous for its active cultural life: with theatres, clubs, art galleries, exhibition- concert halls and  museums.
